Who we are

In the heart of Norwich, The Garnet Pub & Stores has evolved from a cherished local pub to also a vibrant shop. Our position on the corner of Norwich Market offers a unique insight in to the local culture and economy of Norwich and we truly believe you won’t find a better place on a warm afternoon/evening to sit and watch the world go by.

The pubs building has seen two pandemics, two world wars and stands proudly with the kind of wiseness that only comes with age. As custodians of this extraordinary nook of Norwich, we are mindful of the history within these walls which officially became a drinking establishment in 1861 (originally called ‘The Baron of Beef’ from its previous life as a butchers).

During the challenges of the pandemic, we recognised the necessity to adapt and so transformed the pub into a shop that offered not only essentials (beer/wine!) but also an array of carefully selected local produce and crafted goods. When the unit next door laid empty we decided to take the plunge and open a new shop and ‘The Garnet Stores’ was born.

The Garnet stands as a testament to resilience and we are committed as a team to supporting each other and serving our patrons with the same warmth and dedication as we have for decades. We take immense pride in our position, fostering connections that celebrate the essence of our beloved region.

With Easter just around the corner it’s only right that we give this local business and their craft chocolate the spotlight they deserve!

Pump Street was founded in November 2010 by father and daughter team Chris and Joanna Brennan. It is the result of Chris’ years developing his skills as a self-taught baker and later chocolate maker, and Joanna’s enthusiasm for all things gourmande.

Craft chocolate describes the making of chocolate on a smaller scale than we have been accustomed to post 20th century food industrialisation. It usually connotes a process that involves a lot of skill on the part of the maker, made by hand or small batches. Another term that is used almost interchangeably is “Bean to bar”.

We love Pump Street for their community, ethics, innovation, sustainability and of course flavour! By their bars from us now in store and online, the perfect special easter treat!
